The streets of any lively city today tell a monochrome tale. Clusters of young individuals, dressed entirely in deep, shadowy hues, move with natural confidence. It’s reflected in a way, their oversized obsidian hoodies hang effortlessly, chunky silver jewellery gleams under the light, and pigmented eyeliner sharpens their strong aesthetic. This colour isn’t just a shade, it’s a whole vibe, an audacious attitude, and the ultimate power move.
For Gen Z, jet tones have become a silent yet powerful language. Vartika Yadav, 23, pursuing her Master’s in Fashion Communication at Pearl Academy, Delhi, puts it best, “This colour feels like home to me, classic, unforced, and always in sync with my essence. It makes me feel confident, powerful, and comfortable. It’s elegant, suits my personality, and adds a touch of mystery.”
In an era where self-expression is everything, inky shades serve as a blank canvas. Unlike neon or pastels, which demand attention, charcoal dyes has a quiet self-belief. There’s no need for excessive prints or loud colours when deep and dark tones speak volumes on their own. They facilitate variety, making it easy to transition from casual streetwear to high fashion with a simple change in accessories.
Maryam Hussain, 21, a Textile Design student at Pearl Academy, Delhi, shares, “Fashion is my storytelling, an expression of mood, creativity, and growth. Through styling, I embrace individuality, stand tall, and own my journey with confidence. To me, black represent power and allure. It fuels my self-esteem, making a brave yet flawless statement. More than just a shade, it reflects my independence, resilience, and command.”
For many, dark tones are a rebellion against the fast-paced, overly tech-saturated world they exist in. They reject outdated beauty and fashion norms, pushing back against trends that change overnight. While older generations may see this colour as a symbol of mourning or uniformity, but for Gen Z, it represents freedom, empowerment, and strong self-assurance.
