Gen Z doesn’t just follow fashion trends, they create them. Whether it’s about making an outfit look effortlessly chic, or turning comfortable into a statement, this generation knows how to make the perfect balance. The previous generations which were often stuck to rigid fashion norms, Gen-Z refuses to compromise on comfort. For them, fashion isn’t just about looking good, it’s about feeling good too.
The idea of struggling in skin-tight jeans or wobbling in painful heels is gone. The mere thought of discomfort is a nightmare now. Oversized silhouettes, breathable fabrics, and relaxed fits dominate their wardrobes.
Take Janvi Rawat, a 21-year-old English (Hons.) student at Dyal Singh College, Delhi University. She says, “I love experimenting with styles, but if I can’t sit or move freely in them, it’s a no for me. My outfits have to be both, visually appealing and relaxing.”
For Gen-Z, fashion isn’t just about getting dressed, it’s about self- expression, and social media is their personal ramp. Platforms like Instagram, YouTube, and Pinterest serve as inspiration hubs, where Outfit of the Day (OOTD) and Get Ready with Me (GRWM) videos are at supreme. But it’s not about blindly following trends, it’s about curating a look that resonates with their personality.
Naman Tomar, a 20-year-old, Business Administration student at Delhi School of Professional Studies and Research, Delhi, states, “Social media has changed everything. I don’t wear something just because it’s trending, I want my outfit to reflect my personality. My go-to look is, an oversized shirt with a regular fit denim pairing with white sneaker and a cool pair of sunglasses.”
Another game-changer is thrifting. Gen Z is ditching fast fashion for unique, sustainable, and budget-friendly finds. Homegrown brands and thrift stores are on the rise, offering one-of-a-kind pieces that help them stand out while staying eco-friendly.
Sneha Rajput, a 23-year-old, Law student at Christ University, Ghaziabad, is a thrift enthusiast: “I love thrifting because I find unique garments like Pinterest girly skirt or graphitic T-shirts no one else has. Plus, it’s budget-friendly and better for the planet. I mix vintage finds with modern staples, and it makes my style feel personal. And yes, I upload my OOTD daily on my Instagram!”
